Concrete Housing Kossel I and II

De Kossel and Stulemeijer are examples of experiments with concrete to replace traditional brick construction. The Rotterdam Socialist alderman Heijkoop had high hopes for this new building material, as did many architects. The Isola building system used here consists of stacked concrete blocks which were originally left exposed. Its 'severity of conception', pervading greyness, flat roofs and larger module (considered advantageous by the architect) were less enthusiastically received by the general public.
