TOWN HALL TER AAR
J. VAN STIGT, 1965-1970, Aardamseweg 4, Ter Aar
This town hall design is based on four freestanding squares around a fifth central square. Cantilevered cruciform roofs close these off, leaving only the corners open to receive square daylight monitors. The floor of the main hall lies halfway between the ground floor and the upper level. Wet services and, on the roof, small 'pause for thought' rooms are situated where the central square and corner squares overlap. In 1992 a lower-level extension was grafted onto the existing building along suitably structuralist lines.
