A 19th-century villa was saved from demolition by accommodating the requisite programme in a long block flanking Wilhelminastraat. The new block has three clearly articulated levels each distinguished by its material expression. The rubble-clad basement houses storerooms, shops and offices. Next come 26 apartments clad in grey concrete panels. Crowning the whole are six ‘urban villas’ in a rhythmic sculptural entity of timber volumes darting back and forth. The apartments are accessed from a secret courtyard behind the villa and the housing block.
