Radial tree-lined avenues slice through the circular main approach road to De Vijfhoek. The masterplan for this ‘Vinex’ district made provisions to emphasize these intersections with taller buildings, such as Jeroen Schipper’s pair of slender towers flanking the road as a gateway to the district’s centre. At the hub of De Vijfhoek stands KCAP’s five-storey housing block Het Baken, an orientation point that looks different from every angle. No two sides of this six-sided outcrop are parallel and all of them are out of true.
