The urban centre of the Amsterdam district De Aker was designed by Tangram Architects on the strength of a limited entry competition. In fact this firm owes its existence to a competition as it was founded after winning the first Europan. A 400-metre-long building contains 250 apartments, ground-floor shops, a health centre, an activity centre and a primary school. Five gateways in the building give ways through to the residential district beyond. At the rear is a service road and a raised level for pedestrians. Tangram also designed the Zorro apartment tower on De Aker’s central square (Ecuplein).
