HOUSING COENENSTRAAT
J.F. STAAL, 1922-1924, Johan M. Coenenstraat, Bartholomeus Ruloffsstraat, Bronckhorststraat, Amsterdam
Here, Staal's ambivalent attitude to the Amsterdam School precipitated an exemplary synthesis of rectangular/geometric and curved/expressionist decoration. The facade along Coenenstraat is built up of repetitive elements, the most eye-catching being the 'lanterns' above the entrances. A freer design owing more to the Amsterdam School prevails at the corner of Bronckhorststraat. The other corner of the block on Roelof Hartplein is taken up by Boterenbrood's https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/490" class="inline_link">Huize Lydia, a former home for girls in a more straightlaced version of the Amsterdam School style.
