HOUSING BLOCK WEESPERSTRAAT
R.H.M. UYTENHAAK, 1980-1994, Weesperstraat / Nieuwe Kerkstraat, Amsterdam
Uytenhaak's housing bridges the gap between the fine mesh of the concentric rings of canals and the major office development on Weesperstraat. Sitting atop an underground two-storey parking facility, it is intricate in plan with angles rotated to follow local lines of direction. The facades are treated as planes each with its own character combining a stone-textured screen, including a grid in a special mix of concrete, and metal-framed glazing. It is because of this facade configuration that the housing succeeds both as a contemporary infill in an old canalside elevation and as a response to the adjoining large-scale office frontage.
