HOUSING ROBERT SCHUMANNSTRAAT
G.TH. RIETVELD, -1932, Robert Schumannstraat 13-19, Utrecht
This modest block of four dwellings was built as a sequel to his https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/617" class="inline_link">Erasmuslaan block. Originally designed in three storeys, a lack of funds confined it to two. Otherwise the composition is virtually the same as that of its predecessor. The bathroom is located halfway up the stairs; Rietveld would further elaborate this combination of utilities and stair in the 'core'-house principle. The circular stairwell of each dwelling billows into its neighbour where it presents an elegant semicircular spatial element. Like the Erasmuslaan block, this one on Robert Schumannstraat was built at the behest of a Utrecht building firm (Bredero’s Bouwbedrijf).
