HOUSING, URBAN DESIGN ARENAPLAN
C.J.M. WEEBER, 1974-1978, President Kennedylaan/Doornenburg, Alphen aan den Rijn
This quadrant-shaped housing estate of 250 dwelling units was Weeber's first and most successful attempt at formal urban design. Of the plan's five parallel rings each with a different unit type, the outer ring, a 500 m. long wall of housing doubling as a noise barrier, contains units with terraces above a ground-floor parking level. The great length of this wall is emphasized by bands of brown in the yellow brickwork. A second example of Weeber's large-scale geometric approach is the Olympia housing (1979-1987) which ranges 480 units in three rings round a central park.
