One of the leading representatives of a new, 'cosy' style of architecture, Hammel aims to design 'housing with a deliberately different look-low-rise yet with variety: much staggering of fronts, corner houses, an alternation of brick and timber facades, diverse colours (preferably dark brown), and sloping roofs in all shapes and combinations'. This pedestrian shopping precinct with its dwellings bristling with wooden appurtenances was a good example of this style.
