RESTAURANT AND DWELLINGS ALMERE
J.M.J. COENEN, 1984-1987, Grote Markt 121, Almere-Stad
An elongated, tapering light shaft forms the heart of this building whose ground floor and mezzanine, originally housing a restaurant, have since been converted into a bank branch. On the second and third storeys, on either side of the light shaft, is a larger dwelling in two levels; on the street side are ten one-room apartments. Given the sturdy, five-bay spatial arrangement fixed by loadbearing piers alternately executed in pale pink and white concrete block, this alternation of functions can be accommodated with ease.
