YOUTH HOSTEL OCKENBURGH
F. VAN KLINGEREN, 1971-1974, Monsterseweg 4, Den Haag
The two upper storeys of this flexible building, a dark steel box built as an extension to a 19th-century villa, contained space for 400 beds, divided among bedrooms for eight people and a single large dormitory for 50. A dining and recreation hall with a kitchen slotted in took up the entire ground floor. The steel structure, exposed both inside and out, consists of cross beams resting on a quartet of columns with rigid joints. The strip in front of the facade is both a terrace and an emergency exit.
The building's future was uncertain since the youth hostel's departure. The building is disassembled in 2010 for re-use at a new location.
