It was one of the first urban renewal projects presided over by a project group in which residents, council, clients and experts were all represented. Hammel sought to perpetuate here the warmth and charm of the old pre-war portion of street (Oude Binnenweg) by scaling down the street profile of its continuation (Nieuwe Binnenweg). So for the shops he designed an arcade that 'created a certain intimacy and accentuated the pedestrian area'. The project divides into four blocks along Nieuwe Binnenweg with three storeys of porch-access flats above the shops. Small, traffic-free side-streets contain housing with tiny gardens. The distinctive arches in Hammel's design have perished in renovations being carried out by the Mecanoo group.
