Special accommodation
A block of 100 sheltered units for senior citizens (55 plus) needed building at the head of a row of old-age facilities. From an analysis of such planning constraints as building height, lines of vision and sunlighting demands it transpired that only 87 of the 100 would fit into the required envelope. The remaining 13, amalgamated in five small blocks, were simply slung from the glass gallery side of the main block. These 11-metre protuberances look frivolous and terrifying at the same time. The composition as a whole explores the twin themes of cantilever and variations on a limited set of accessories.
