The two existing pavilions and the nurses’ residence for this commune for the mentally handicapped were extended by Cees Dam over the years with several clusters of accommodation and a few free-standing buildings containing additional facilities. The buildings are interlinked by a network of roofed paths coded by colour. Excessive uniformity has been avoided by having the architecture of each new extension deviate from that of its predecessors. The facades of the single-storey clusters around the square and along the streets are heightened to give the centre of the complex an almost urban demeanour.
