PRIVATE HOUSE CARP
J. CROUWEL JR./H.TH. TEEUWISSE, -1921, Aarle-Rixtelseweg 63-67, Helmond
In 1921, the manufacturer J.A. Carp commissioned H.Th. Teeuwisse, the then Government Architect, to design this villa with servant's quarters and a garage. Teeuwisse let his assistant J. Crouwel Jr. work up the design in a style akin to Amsterdam School. Shaped like an airplane in plan, the villa boasts a central hall with a well and leaded-glass ceiling. The house is dominated by the tower, and by the steeply raked mansard roof which suggests a single level instead of two. The layout of the grounds and the design of the staff residence attest to a similarly sensitive treatment. At present the house is being used as an architect's office.
