At the end of the 20th century, the demand for genuine 1930s housing exceeded the supply many times over. Property developers then decided to start mass-producing some of their own. Dierdonk is an overspill area of some 1800 housing units in a density of less than 20 units per hectare. The low density, the generous quantities of green space and water and the mostly curving streets combine in a park-like setting. There are three residential ambiences to choose from, ‘avenue’, ‘water’ and ‘wood’s-edge’. Supervisor Van de Ven saw to it that the private-sector houses also kept to such typical external hallmarks as red brick, large roof overhangs and bay windows.
