Las Palmas (Workshop building H.A.L.)
'Las Palmas' began life as a warehouse cum workshop building, concluding post-war reconstruction for the Holland-America Line complex. It once had a passageway on the ground floor to admit lorries; its concrete frame and the lifts are geared to heavy transport. Open glazed stair halls - a typical feature of Van den Broek & Bakema's architecture - point up the exterior with its cladding of precast concrete elements. Since 2001 Las Palmas has served cultural ends. Since 2007, following alterations made to it by Benthem Crouwel, the complex bears the name https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/2184" class="inline_link">Las Palmas and houses a mix of museums, institutes and companies concerned with visual culture.
