FIRST CHURCH OF CHRIST, SCIENTIST
H.P. BERLAGE, 1925-1926, Andries Bickerweg 1b, Den Haag
ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE):
Hein Berlage
INTERIOR ARCHITECT:
Piet Zwart
BUILDING TYPE:
Religious buildings
Berlage designed this ensemble of a church, an assembly hall, a verger's residence and a school on a curiously shaped plot with great differences in height. Each component is individually expressed in the exterior, the whole being crowned with a carefully placed tower. The influence of Frank Lloyd Wright is evident in the lively articulation of the volumes and in the abstract interior (done in collaboration with Piet Zwart) in which such modern elements as concrete columns and glass brick make their presence felt.
