After proposals made between 1911 and 1913 by Berlage, Behrens and Mies van der Rohe had been rejected, it was Van de Velde who received the commission to design a home for the Kröller-Müller family art collection. Construction of his ambitious design began in 1921, only to be discontinued due to the economic crisis. The collection and the surrounding landed property were bequeathed to the State, who then commissioned temporary accommodation. The resulting museum building of 1938, later extended in 1953 with a sculpture gallery and great hall, became celebrated for its intimacy, its rapport with its natural surroundings and its balanced lighting using rooflights with which the collection, which includes a great many Van Goghs, is shown to good advantage.
Between 1975 and 1977 the museum was extended by Quist with a new wing.
