De Wiekslag, a girls' school teaching domestic crafts, was built between 1953 and 1955 to a design by the Kuiper, Gouwetor & De Ranitz firm of architects. Architecturally unprepossessing in itself, the small school was used for some years as studio space for visual artists. The front facade with its large concrete portals had become popular among schoolkids as a place to hang out. To reduce the nuisance this caused, the artists came up with a novel solution. They constructed a replica of the entrance portals several metres away in the street. This keeps the local youngsters literally in their place and allows the artists to work undisturbed.
