Hotels, cafés, restaurants
E. Breman (oorspr. ontw. 1915-1917)
A former hotel for emigrants, built in 1917, that last did duty as a prison for young offenders has since been transformed into a hotel for both long-term and short-term cultural tourists. The facades have been retained wholesale and restored. Inside, though, the change is complete. Behind the south elevation a large well has been hewn from the ground floor to the roof beams. This entirely white-rendered principal space with a public café cum restaurant on the ground floor is shot through with a network of stairs, bridges and galleries stitching the individual communal areas together. The hotel rooms, ranging from small and simple to five-star apartments, are each fitted out in accordance with a particular theme and served by 17 different types of bathroom.
