The ‘circus theatre’ combines an amusement hall cum fruit machine arcade with a cinema. The first is a colourful interplay of voids, differences in level and footbridges beneath a concrete roof resembling a circus tent. The cinema facade has mirror-glass cladding and is decorated with five gigantic flags of sheet steel glued to which are mosaic tiles. Two complete flags form the head elevations of the cinema; the other three are only suggested. Taking a leaf out of Venturi’s book, Soeters has treated both inside and out to the trashy formal vocabulary of the amusement industry.
