BUILDING TYPE:
Museums and exhibition buildings

For this museum extension, Gunnar Daan took a number of discrete premises in the inner city, among them the stately Kanselarij and the Van Eysingahuis, and drew them together. The original proposal, a six-sided bridge across Turfmarkt, was replaced after a storm of local opposition with a tunnel linking the existing building to the new, a solution that left the protected cityscape intact. This new-build matches the original premises in scale but is nothing like them material-wise. One striking feature is the triangular glass window overlooking the tunnel.
