The railway lifting-bridge, known as 'De Hef', shares with the characteristic Koninginnebrug and the Willems Bridge the task of linking the central island (Noordereiland) with the banks of the River Maas. Without doubt the most eulogized bridge in the Netherlands, it has a special place in the hearts of Rotterdammers and is a perpetual source of inspiration for poets, film-makers and architects. Made redundant when the railway tunnel was built below the Maas, the Hef was saved from impending demolition by the ensuing storm of protest. It has since been declared a national monument.
