In 1990 the City of Rotterdam accepted a proposal by landscape architect Adriaan Geuze for the redesign of Schouwburgplein. In it the 'theatre square' is conceived as a podium raised 35 cm above street level; the lighting installed in this space gives an effect of floating. The square is divided into three functional zones each with its own type of paving. The largest, central zone is finished in light metal so as to support more robust activity. The one to the east of wood and rubber is a gathering space complete with pavement cafés and lit by four hydraulic light masts. The third zone of poured concrete levelled with epoxy is largely in the shade.
Around the square you can find the City Theatre, the Housing Dock, the Multiplex and Concert Centre De Doelen.
