Granpré Molière, who was converted to Catholicism three years after taking up his Delft professorship in 1924, was particularly active in the field of ecclesiastical architecture. If his post-war church in Breda (Onze Lieve Vrouw van Altijd Durende Bijstand) is a contemporary take on the ancient basilica, this one is utterly traditional in conception. 'Rooted in objectivity, our buildings rise above it according to the degree of spirituality of the objectives. The house represents worship above everything else. Here, all things useful are left far behind and the language of beauty is spoken.'
