Housing Block Calypso

This complex consisted of a high-rise block of 140 hotel rooms, a less-tall block containing a youth hostel (smaller rooms with communal wash and toilet units) and a low-rise block of restaurant and facilities for meetings and sports, since the 70s housing offices and a cinema. The concrete frame was faced mainly with a refined aluminium membrane. The Mauritsweg facade expressed the confrontation of an orthogonal plan with its obtuse angled urban site. During renovations carried out in 1988, hotel-rooms in the main block were enlarged and the curtain wall was replaced by an easier-to-clean cladding of sandwich panels. The building is demolished together with the nearby Pauluskerk in 2007, making place for the Calypso housing block by William Alsop.
