For centuries, Utrecht’s town hall had been housed in a growing series of adjoining canalside premises. The renovation process began with removing a major share of the adaptations and extensions. What used to be the rear of the assemblage now boasts a plaza and a new main entrance following the removal of an administrative building. New routeing through the string of premises has not affected their labyrinthine quality. Some of the old layers freed during the demolition programme have been left exposed and mixed with new layers so that visitors are confronted at every turn with the rich palette of the town hall’s history.
