Much of Rotterdam's shopping centre went missing as a result of the air raid of May 1940. In that same year several temporary shopping complexes were built at speed to alleviate the worst distress. These shops had a concrete slab for foundations and white-rendered walls made of bricks taken from the rubble. Designed by various architects, the low-rise shops have a certain dash. Where the NAi now stands there was once a large shopping centre that extended as far as the head end of Nieuwe Binnenweg. The last section was demolished in the early 1980s to be replaced by the Boogjes arcade, leaving this Old Dutch restaurant as the sole surviving temporary retail building. Its cottage-style architecture emanates the air of the wine bars of before the war.
