In 1780 or thereabouts it was decided to build a repairs yard for warships along the waters of Nieuwediep. A dry dock came into operation in 1822 followed by storehouses, workshops and barracks in a symmetrical configuration. In 1993 the Royal Netherlands Navy relocated from the monumental state shipyard to a new efficient harbour along the Wadden Sea dyke. The old shipyard or Rijkswerf is being restored to a plan by Van Hoogevest Architecten and Atelier Quadrat with a multiplex cinema designed by cepezed, the Dutch Naval Museum and National Lifeboat Museum with new-build by architect Erik Knippers, and a yacht harbour.
