Railway Lifting Bridge
Having proved too narrow, the former bridge of this name dating from 1870 was replaced at the same time that the railway lifting bridge (https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/931" class="inline_link">De Hef) was built. The new Koninginnebrug has a wider deck and a greater navigable width. Chosen on the strength of a competition, Van Rood's design was hardly adventurous but did satisfy the set requirements. The new bridge was an unassuming horizontal engineering structure, whereas the spectacular lifting bridge submitted by J. Emmen would have competed favourably with De Hef. The structure of Van Rood's bridge, a double bascule, is the stepping-off point for its design. The pointed copper roofs of the circular bridgehouses are typical of its architcture.
