Rotterdam's latest residential district is sited on land annexed from the municipality of Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel, with a metro line as its only link to the city. Built as part of the Vinex urban development programme, it consists mainly of middle and higher income housing. Its housing reflects the current trend of thought in the Netherlands and in that respect is typical Vinex. At its centre is a two kilometre long green zone of watercourses and ecological shores. Here too are the electricity masts and the elevated metro line which ends at a terminal. Local facilities - shopping centre, community centre, library, health centre - are concentrated here near the metro station. Its waterside location on Zevenhuizerplas inspired Waterwijk, a district of 500 plots to be built up free of official meddling; the houses sit on islands and have a landing stage for a small boat. The complete freedom in designing these houses has produced a very mixed bag of dream homes whose owners' notions of architecture clash somewhat. By contrast, the block at the entrance to Waterwijk, designed by Joke Vos, had to abide by the rules.
