M. BRINKMAN, 1913-1915, Brielselaan 115/Maashaven Z.z., Rotterdam
ARCHITECT(URAL OFFICE):
Michiel Brinkman
EXTENSION:
M.J.L. Gadron
BUILDING TYPE:
Industrial and public-utility buildings
The oldest part of this flour mill was designed in 1913 by Michiel Brinkman. The building was then enlarged at various stages, first by Brinkman and later by Brinkman & Van der Vlugt. The oldest silo is entirely of concrete, its structure very closely resembling that of a traditional timber structure. The rye flour mill makes use of mushroom columns, one of the first Dutch examples of this system which was developed in the early years of the 20th century. Mushroom floors would later be deployed in the https://www.architectureguide.nl/project/item/prj_id/251" class="inline_link">Van Nelle factory. All factory buildings and offices have their main facade on Maashaven. Brinkman designed sturdy masses, rectangular boxes with pitched roofs, bordered and linked by tower-shaped elements. The most striking part to be seen from Brielselaan is the flour and sack silo dating from 1953, consisting of 90 square cells 46 metres high.
