The construction of the Ahoy’ complex and a roofed shopping centre (D046) consolidated Zuidplein's position as city centre south of the river. The Ahoy’ business and entertainment complex was built to host large-scale indoor sports events, concerts, trade fairs, exhibitions and congresses. The oval sports hall, which included a wooden cycle track, was in 1970 the largest roofed sports accommodation in the Netherlands, measuring 100 by 102 metres and spanned by steel joists with a lens-like cross-section. The exhibition zone has six halls with a surface area of between 4000 and 5000 square metres. These can all be connected using sliding partitions. The complex was renovated in 1998, when the central entrance zone was modernized and a new hall added to the ensemble.
