HOFDIJK
J. VERHOEVEN, 1977-1983, Stroveer e.o., Rotterdam
This project was an attempt to design a housing estate 'with an individual identity yet part and parcel of Rotterdam'. This was done by having the River Rotte thread through the plan; by assembling a unified estate from small manageable elements though with the repetition of stylized 'Rotterdam roofs' to identify individual units; by using streets-in-the-air to provide units with a maximum of 'street' access; and by creating an atmosphere in which 'the fullest possible reflection of life may be expressed'.
