When the 19th-century overhead railway was replaced in 1993 by a tunnel, Blaak Station, rather than being elevated as it had been, was tucked underground. Powerful air currents from the tunnel were the reason for choosing a broad direct link between platforms and the open air. Covering this link and marking the mainline and metro stations is a transparent dish 35 metres in diameter slung obliquely from an arciform structure. The dish, suspended by means of two tubes with three stays apiece, is a space frame of triangular elements sealed off with plastic panels; the arch structure is a triangular lattice truss.
