Micha de Haas’s ‘Aluminium Woods’ won the competition to design a new knowledge and information centre for the combined Dutch aluminium industry. Borne aloft on 368 slender tubular columns of various diameters, the square building gives an idea of the structural and aesthetic potential of aluminium. It is moreover modular, flexible and easily dismantled and satisfies the demands made of sustainable building in the future. Four voids deliver daylight into the offices, conference rooms and an exhibition area with its roof structure of triangular aluminium trusses.
