Afrikaanderplein is the one public open space in Afrikaanderwijk, a district crammed with workers' housing. This square 'which is never finished, keeps entire generations of designers busy, slurps up funds and still fails to satisfy' was redesigned in 1930, 1947, 1970, 1985 and 2006. During the most recent operation Afrikaanderplein was stripped back to a green area surrounded by a fence. Oblique paths cross the sunken lawn. The surrounding promenade has low-slung concrete balustrades that can be used as benches. There are also flights of stairs that can be sat on informally or to watch an event. The edges of the park have a small playground, spaces for sports, a water feature and a botanic garden to meet the needs of different target groups.
