Villa District De Etalage
Private House De Waal (Utrecht)
This villa district of 42 plots sits on the rim of Zielhorst, an overspill area near Kattenbroek but built earlier (see also Private House Wilbrink. Seven model villas were developed as scale models in a bid to interest potential clients in a house designed by one of the selected front-line Dutch architects. The most striking building in the entire park is unquestionably Piet Blom's 'Russian palace'. That Blom, whose earlier enthusiasms included kasbahs and cube houses, should then turn to the onion-domes of Russian architecture, admirably suited his client's ideas. H. de Waal, the property developer, who before then had given Ton Alberts free rein in designing a house, had this new one built for his wife, a Russian pianist. Imitation onion-domes terminate the service shafts, with one on the gatehouse as a dovecote.
