Masterplan Almere-Centrum

Amidst the architectural and contextual free-for-all that is the new heart of Almere, De Kunstlinie by the Japanese architects Sejima and Nishizawa is a tranquil oasis on the shore of Weerwater. It combines a theatre and a cultural centre complete with numerous rooms for classes. Three theatre auditoria rise from a virtually square single-storey volume enlivened with several patios to admit natural light. Two equally tall foyers emphasize the main auditorium, as does a wall painting in vivid colours along one foyer wall. Slender steel columns, largely hidden structural and technical elements, white walls and floors and the mass of glass held in thin steel frames all add up to a light-filled, ethereal, minimalist building.
