This new theatre and congress centre is at the forefront of plans to renew the centre of Lelystad which dates from the 1970s and is now felt to be passé. Indeed, both form (a multi-faceted seemingly haphazard volume) and colour (an explosive orange yellow inspired by sunsets above the waters of IJsselmeer) could not deviate more from its drab surroundings. Apart from its theatre duties the building can be used for congresses, functions, trade fairs, product presentations and TV broadcasts. For these and other reasons the ensemble boasts four foyers and three multifunctional auditoria. In the interior, the crowning spatial feature is the grand staircase circling up to the light with public spaces on all sides. Like the exterior, the large vivid red theatre auditorium has many facets on its walls and ceiling.
