Michel de Klerk
Urban Design Amsterdam-Zuid
Only the facades of this housing block in Amsterdam-Zuid are the work of De Klerk. In those days it was not unusual for architects to provide mass housing with an 'aesthetic' exterior, which probably explains why work by the Amsterdam School was often called 'schortjesarchitectuur' (pinafore architecture). In this case staggered balconies linked to bow windows create a play of diagonals stepping down the facades. The elevations on the other side of Vrijheidslaan are by Piet Kramer.
