In 1875 the young architect Evert Margry (1841-1891), one of Cuypers' pupils, was commissioned to design this Roman Catholic church in Kralingen. Margry designed more than 40 churches including Hildegardiskerk in Oude Noorden (1892) and St Liduinakerk in Schiedam (1878). The St Lambertuskerk with its unusually tall spire, is configured as a cruciform basilica in Neo-Gothic style. Catholics in this country, with the new-found freedom gained under French rule, once again had the right to build their own churches and had a predilection for this style referring to the glorious Middle Ages. Originally this church had the simplest decorations so as to lay emphasis on the beauty of the building itself. The present interior by contrast has many colourful paintings dating from 1903 and an organ from 1900 designed by Maarschalkerweerd, the celebrated firm of organ builders. The ensemble also includes a small cemetery and a parsonage with a large back garden.
