Originally this pier was almost exclusively used by the transatlantic shipping company Holland Amerika Lijn. Its headquarters have been refurbished as a hotel/restaurant. One of the first new buildings to join it is the Marine Simulator Centre designed by Sir Norman Foster, who also drew up the masterplan for Wilhelminapier. Foster went on to design the World Port Center, the new headquarters of Rotterdam's port management corporation. Another foreign luminary, Renzo Piano, designed the KPN Telecom office building at the foot of the Erasmus Bridge. Tall apartment buildings by Alvaro Siza (New Orleans) and Cruz & Ortiz (San Francisco, Boston, Philadelphia and Havana) are build on the south side of the pier alongside Montevideo. In 2010 the 'Rotterdam' by OMA was started building.
