URBAN DESIGN VENSERPOLDER
C.J.M. WEEBER, 1980-1982, Alexander Dumaslaan e.o., Amsterdam
Like OMA’s IJ-plein built at the same time, the masterplan for Venserpolder was a reaction to 1970s urban development characterized by multiformity and a fear of grand statements. Here, perimeter blocks of housing, 16 rectangular with splayed corners and one quadrant-shaped, stand within a grid of broad streets. The green inner courts are public. Key buildings are the double-sized housing block by Weeber himself and the sensitively detailed block by De Kat & Peek (corner of Charlotte Brontëstraat and Chestertonlaan) with its studio houses at the rounded corner.
