Dating from the 1960s, Utrecht's University campus 'De Uithof' had long been denounced for its piecemeal planning and ineffective architecture. OMA's masterplan sought a more compact solution and the Netherlands' architectural elite was enlisted to design various new buildings for it. Since then, the new Uithof has steadily grown into a showcase of Dutch 1990s architecture, with projects like the Minnaert Building by Neutelings Riedijk, the Educatorium by OMA, the Basket Bar by NL Architects, the University Library by Wiel Arets, the School of Economics and Management by Mecanoo, the Ronald McDonaldhuis by Bosch Haslett, the Student Accommodation by Rudy Uytenhaak and the Total Energy Plant by Liesbeth van der Pol. Other projects worth mentioning besides those treated separately are the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance laboratory designed by UN Studio (Leuvenlaan, 1997-2001), Jan Hoogstad's Netherlands Institute for Applied Geoscience (Princetonlaan, 1998-2002), Drost + van Veen's crèche 'De Kleine Kikker' (Toulouselaan 43, 2003) and the Hijmans van den Bergh Building designed by E.L.J.M. van Egeraat (EEA) (Universiteitsweg 98, 2002-2005).
