Kanaalzone, the area in Middelburg between the railway line and the major north-south canal (Kanaal door Walcheren) has been filled out with an array of urban amenities to bring about a better link-up between the town centre and the post-war growth areas. West of the station are Henket's lawcourts and the main provincial library (Zeeuwse Bibliotheek). East of it stand the offices of the provincial water management authority (WZE) designed by Rothuizen Van Doorn 't Hooft and Thomas Rau's new municipal office. The public areas on the first floor are reached up ramps, with the government staff housed in four towers shifted slightly out of alignment.
