The construction of Kop van Zuid necessitated adding this new metro station. At 16 metres below ground level, it is the deepest in the Netherlands. It was constructed around the existing tunnel where metro traffic continued unhindered. The order of construction was reversed, the walls being poured first and the roof placed on top. Then the platform floors were poured and the existing tunnel could be opened up. V-shaped struts hold the existing tunnel in place. Large round holes punched in the tunnel wall ensure visual contact between the two platforms. The 135 metre long platform floors slope to accommodate the greater depth of the tunnel beneath the Maas. The projected pedestrian tunnel complete with travelators between the station and the forecourt of the Luxor Theatre was completed in 2005.
