This was Van Klingeren's first application of his 'agora' concept, a multi-purpose space for sports and games, markets, fairs and events, concerts and television shows, further functioning as a community centre and meeting place. The design placed a number of fixed elements - two large cinema screens, two enclosed auditoria, an oval theatre and a raised level of foyer and bar-restaurant with services underneath - in a spacious neutral hall with an unprotected steel structure and glazed skin. In 2005 De Meerpaal was drastically recast. All that remains of the original building is the multifunctional hall beneath the large roof and the oval volume. New blocks of facilities - a library, a new theatre, a cinema and a school of music - slot into the surrounding space.
